A TheYouthTalks Intelligence Brief | India’s Top 100 Gen Z Brands 2026

For decades, campus-focused brands have competed on predictable promises.

More durable backpacks.

Better notebooks.

More affordable pricing.

Improved product quality.

The assumption has been straightforward: build functional products that students need, and loyalty will naturally follow.

Gen Z is quietly challenging that assumption.

Our survey of more than 5,000 Indian college students suggests that the brands accompanying students through campus life are valued for far more than their functionality. Increasingly, they become symbols of independence, identity and everyday self-expression.

The brands students carry every day are also the brands that help define how they see themselves.

Campus products are becoming personal statements.

The Big Finding: Being Carried Isn’t the Same as Being Chosen

Skybags emerged as the most widely used campus brand in our research, reaching more than half of all respondents.

Its broad distribution has made it a familiar part of student life across India.

Yet when students were asked a different question—“Which campus brand do you genuinely love?”—the answers changed dramatically.

Puma emerged as the strongest spontaneous favourite despite lower overall usage, while Levi’s and Adidas also demonstrated a stronger ability to transform customers into advocates.

The distinction matters.

Availability creates adoption.

Identity creates attachment.

Students often use whatever is easiest to access.

But they recommend brands that reflect who they aspire to be.

That emotional gap increasingly determines long-term brand strength.

Campus Has Entered the Independence Economy

TheYouthTalks’ Love Score measures how effectively brands convert usage into emotional preference.

Within campus brands, that score reflects something deeper than product satisfaction.

It reflects independence.

For many young people, college represents the first environment where purchasing decisions become entirely their own.

The backpack they carry.

The notebook they open.

The shoes they wear.

The bottle they place on the desk.

Every choice quietly communicates personality.

The strongest campus brands understand that they are not simply part of a student’s routine.

They become part of a student’s identity.

Function Gets You Purchased. Identity Gets You Remembered.

One of the clearest insights from this year’s research is that Gen Z remains highly practical.

Durability and quality emerged as the single biggest purchase driver, followed closely by affordability and design.

Students are careful buyers.

Budgets matter.

Value matters.

Reliability matters.

But once those expectations are met, differentiation becomes emotional rather than functional.

Design begins to communicate personality.

Brand begins to communicate belonging.

Products evolve into symbols.

The most successful campus brands recognise that students buy rationally—but build emotional relationships over time.

Campus Is the World’s Largest Recommendation Engine

College remains one of the most visible environments for brand discovery.

Every classroom, cafeteria and hostel functions as a live showroom where students constantly observe what others carry and use.

Nearly four out of five respondents reported influencing the purchasing decisions of friends, while recommendation continues to play an important role in brand discovery.

Brands such as Puma, Levi’s and Adidas appear to benefit from this visibility.

Every backpack slung over a shoulder.

Every notebook on a classroom desk.

Every hoodie worn across campus.

Each becomes an advertisement that feels more authentic than paid media.

On campus, visibility naturally becomes credibility.

The Next Campus Brands Will Build Rituals, Not Products

The first generation of student brands succeeded by solving practical problems.

The next generation will succeed by becoming part of everyday rituals.

As functional quality becomes increasingly standard, emotional relevance will define future winners.

Students will remember the brands that accompanied late-night study sessions, placement interviews, college festivals and friendships.

The strongest campus brands will not merely help students get through college.

They will become woven into the memories that define those years.

Three Strategic Lessons for Campus Brands

1. Utility Creates Purchase. Identity Creates Preference.

Students initially buy products because they need them.

They recommend brands because those products become part of how they express themselves.

2. Every Campus Is a Living Marketplace.

Students constantly influence one another through observation, conversation and shared experiences.

The most effective marketing often begins with everyday visibility.

3. Rituals Build Stronger Brands Than Campaigns.

The products students use every single day accumulate emotional meaning over time.

Consistency creates familiarity.

Familiarity creates affection.

Monday Morning Memo for Campus Brand Leaders

Before approving your next product line or marketing campaign, ask three questions.

  • Are we designing products students use—or products they proudly carry?
  • What role does our brand play in a student’s journey toward independence?
  • Five years after graduation, what memories will our products still be part of?

Those answers will determine whether your brand becomes another campus purchase—or a lasting companion through one of life’s most formative chapters.

TheYouthTalks Verdict

India’s campus brand ecosystem is entering the independence economy.

The next generation of category leaders will not be defined solely by stronger materials, better pricing or wider availability.

They will be remembered for helping students navigate one of the most important transitions of their lives.

Gen Z increasingly chooses brands that fit naturally into its daily routines while reinforcing confidence, individuality and belonging.

The brands that understand this shift will move beyond selling campus essentials.

They will become trusted companions during the years when identities are shaped, ambitions take root and lifelong memories are created.

Because in the future of campus brands, students are not simply carrying products.

They are carrying the first version of the person they are becoming.
