A TheYouthTalks Intelligence Report | India’s Top 100 Gen Z Brands 2026
For decades, the beauty industry has operated on a familiar formula. Build awareness through celebrity endorsements, dominate retail shelves, increase digital visibility and eventually consumers will choose your brand.
Gen Z appears to be rewriting that playbook.
Our survey of more than 5,000 Indian college students reveals a growing disconnect between the beauty brands young consumers use and the brands they genuinely love. The implication is significant: visibility may still create awareness, but it no longer guarantees emotional preference.
Instead, Gen Z is rewarding brands that earn trust, deliver authentic experiences and become worthy of recommendation.
For India’s beauty industry, that shift could define the next decade of competition.
The Big Finding: Recognition Doesn’t Equal Preference
One of the clearest patterns emerging from this year’s research is that usage and affection are no longer moving together.
L’Oréal Paris remains one of the most widely used beauty brands among Gen Z, reaching approximately one-third of the students we surveyed. Yet when respondents were asked—without prompts or brand lists—to name their favourite beauty brand, almost none mentioned L’Oréal first.
MyGlamm told a very different story.
Despite serving a smaller customer base, it emerged as one of the strongest emotionally preferred brands among respondents.
This gap between usage and spontaneous preference is not just an interesting statistic. It represents one of the most important competitive signals for beauty marketers today.
Consumers may buy the biggest brands.
But they remember—and recommend—the brands that make them feel understood.
Beauty Has Become a Trust Economy
For years, marketing success in beauty has been measured by impressions, reach and visibility.
Gen Z appears to value something different.
When asked what influences their purchase decisions, recommendation from influencers, creators and friends emerged as the single strongest driver. Close behind were product ingredients and proven effectiveness.
Together these findings tell a larger story.
Young consumers are not simply looking for products that promise results.
They are looking for brands they believe.
Trust now sits at the centre of the beauty purchase journey.
Advertising may introduce a product.
Recommendation earns the first trial.
Performance earns loyalty.
For marketers, that distinction is becoming increasingly important.
The New Currency Is Credibility
Unlike many consumer categories, beauty products become part of everyday identity.
People wear them.
Share them.
Recommend them.
Discuss them.
Every recommendation carries personal credibility.
That is precisely why Gen Z is selective about the brands it advocates.
Students overwhelmingly reported influencing the purchase decisions of friends and family, making peer recommendation one of the most powerful forms of marketing available to any beauty brand.
But recommendations are never distributed equally.
Consumers recommend products that consistently deliver results, align with their values and reinforce their own identity.
In our research, brands such as MyGlamm, Mamaearth and Dot & Key appear to be benefiting from exactly this dynamic—building emotional affinity that extends beyond product usage into genuine advocacy.
In today’s beauty market, customers are no longer just buyers.
They are media channels.
What Legacy Brands Should Learn
For established beauty companies, this research is not a warning.
It is an opportunity.
Scale, distribution and brand recognition remain powerful competitive advantages.
But they are no longer sufficient on their own.
Brands that focus exclusively on visibility risk becoming familiar without becoming meaningful.
The next phase of growth will belong to companies capable of combining product excellence with emotional relevance.
That requires a different marketing mindset.
Less interruption.
More conversation.
Less celebrity.
More community.
Less persuasion.
More trust.
The companies winning Gen Z are not always shouting the loudest.
Many are simply being recommended more often.
Three Strategic Lessons for Beauty Leaders
- Awareness creates discovery. Trust creates preference.
The largest advertising budgets may still generate attention, but recommendation increasingly determines which brands become favourites.
- Influence starts the conversation. Product quality finishes it.
Creators and peers may introduce consumers to a brand, but effectiveness and ingredient credibility determine whether relationships endure.
- Emotional equity will become beauty’s most valuable asset.
Market share explains today’s winners.
Emotional connection is more likely to explain tomorrow’s.
Brands that consistently convert users into advocates will enjoy stronger long-term loyalty as Gen Z’s purchasing power grows over the coming decade.
Monday Morning Memo for Beauty CMOs
If you lead a beauty brand today, your next leadership meeting should revolve around three questions.
- Would customers still recommend us if we stopped advertising tomorrow?
- Are we investing enough in trust-building alongside visibility?
- Does our brand create customers—or advocates?
The answers may prove more valuable than your next campaign.
TheYouthTalks Verdict
India’s beauty industry is entering a trust-first era.
The next generation of category leaders will not simply be defined by distribution, celebrity endorsements or advertising spend.
They will be defined by their ability to build credibility in an increasingly recommendation-driven market.
For Gen Z, beauty is no longer only about appearance.
It is about authenticity.
The brands that consistently earn trust, deliver meaningful experiences and inspire genuine advocacy are the ones most likely to shape India’s beauty market over the next decade.
